The match began with DR Congo, known as the Leopards, asserting early dominance, capitalizing on Kenya’s nervy start with high pressing that forced defensive errors. Within the first 15 minutes, DR Congo thought they had taken the lead through Jephté Kitambala, but a VAR review disallowed the goal due to a foul on Kenya’s captain, Abud Omar. The decision shifted momentum, with Kenya finding their footing. In the 18th minute, Omar went close with a dangerous free-kick just outside the box, signaling the hosts’ growing confidence.

Kenya’s attacking intent shone through in the 26th minute when Masud Juma latched onto a precise through ball from Omar, only for DR Congo goalkeeper Brudel Efonge Liyongo to make a sharp save. Despite their pressure, Kenya struggled to convert chances, while DR Congo’s man-to-man marking disrupted the midfield trio of Austine Odhiambo, Alpha Onyango, and Masoud Omar.

“They came out firing, but we settled down after the VAR call. That gave us the belief to push forward,” said head coach Benni McCarthy in a post-match interview.

As the first half drew to a close, the game grew cagey, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. With six minutes of stoppage time announced, Kenya seized their moment in the 45+6 minute. A counterattack, sparked by a crucial tackle from captain Abud Omar, saw Austine Odhiambo take center stage. The midfielder weaved past two defenders with deft footwork before calmly slotting the ball past the advancing Efonge, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

“The stadium erupted when I scored. That goal was for every Kenyan here supporting us,” said Odhiambo, who was named Man of the Match for his match-winning performance.

DR Congo made two halftime substitutions to chase an equalizer, while Kenya introduced Boniface Muchiri and Marvin Nabwire in the 66th minute, followed by a triple substitution in the 77th minute, bringing on Chris Erambo, Mike Kibwage, and Ben Stanley. The changes bolstered Kenya’s resolve, with centre-back Manzur Suleiman, deployed in a defensive midfield role, playing a pivotal part in disrupting DR Congo’s rhythm.

“I initially considered Manzur at left-back, but his energy and bravery made him a perfect fit for midfield. He did the dirty work, allowing our attackers to shine,” McCarthy explained. “Manzur protected our back four brilliantly, and that let Alpha Onyango play progressive passes and Austine create magic.”

DR Congo nearly equalized in the 75th minute when Horso Muaku broke through, only to fire wide with Kenyan goalkeeper Byrne Omondi exposed. Despite seven minutes of added time and sustained pressure from the Leopards, Kenya’s defense, anchored by Omar and Omondi’s crucial saves, held firm to secure all three points.

This victory marks a landmark moment for Kenyan football, as the Harambee Stars celebrated their first-ever CHAN goal and win. The result, witnessed by dignitaries including President William Ruto and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, boosts Kenya’s confidence in Group A, which includes tough opponents like Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. For DR Congo, the defeat adds pressure to their campaign as they aim to reclaim their status as two-time CHAN champions.

“I’m proud of my team—many were stepping onto this stage for the first time. Beating a tournament favorite like DR Congo is massive. We were nervous early, but the boys showed real bravery,” McCarthy said. “Austine’s goal just before the break was perfectly timed. It changed the game.”

McCarthy also highlighted the tactical decision to deploy Manzur Suleiman in midfield: “Having Manzur do the hard work let Alpha and Austine thrive. He was one of our best players today.”

The Harambee Stars now turn their attention to their next Group A match against Angola on August 6, aiming to build on this historic triumph in the CHAN 2024 tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. For now, the Kasarani faithful will cherish a night of unity and pride in Kenyan football.
