A family in Mombasa is still searching for answers after the sudden death of their loved one, who was electrocuted while at work at Moi International Airport.

The death of Jimmy Kitavi, a father of three, has left his family in pain, confusion, and deep uncertainty as they try to understand how such a tragedy could happen in a busy and secure workplace.

Jimmy Kitavi died on January 2, 2026, while carrying out his normal duties at Moi International Airport. He was employed by Eurocraft Company, a firm operating within the airport. According to information shared by the family, the incident occurred at around 4:00 pm during working hours.

At first, details surrounding the incident were unclear, leaving the family with many unanswered questions.

A postmortem examination later confirmed that Kitavi died as a result of electrocution. This finding raised serious concerns about safety conditions at the workplace, especially given the high number of workers and daily activities at the airport.

For the family, the medical report only added to their pain, as they struggled to understand how an electric shock could occur while their loved one was on duty.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Kitavi’s brother, Paul Kitavi, said they have been making repeated efforts to find out what truly happened. He explained that since the day of the incident, the family has been moving from one office to another seeking clear information.

He noted that the postmortem results confirmed their fears that Jimmy was electrocuted while working, yet no clear explanation has been given on how the accident occurred.

The family also fears that without public attention and proper follow-up, the case could be ignored. They worry that justice may not be served unless those responsible are identified and held accountable. To them, this is not just about compensation, but about ensuring that such an incident does not happen to another worker.

Kitavi’s widow, Mercy Chepkonga, spoke emotionally about the loss of her husband, describing him as the sole provider for the family. She said her life has been completely changed by his sudden death. With no job and three children to care for, she now faces an uncertain future. She shared that they had many plans as a family, all of which were cut short by the tragedy.

The family has also questioned how they were informed about Kitavi’s death. His uncle, Kigosi Nzuki, raised concerns over why relatives living far from Mombasa were contacted first, instead of the widow who was within the city at the time. He said this added to the family’s distress and confusion during an already painful moment.

Eurocraft Company has stated that investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are still ongoing. The company says it will take appropriate action once the investigations are complete.

The family hopes the truth will come out and that justice will be done for Jimmy Kitavi, while also improving safety for other workers in similar environments.
