KeRRA announces Nyandarua road tenders shortly after Methu questions Ruto on delays

The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has announced new tender notices for the upgrading of key roads in Nyandarua County, just days after Senator John Methu publicly challenged President William Ruto over delayed infrastructure projects in the region.

The move includes tenders for the upgrading of major corridors such as the Murungaru–Tulasha–Gilgil Road and the Gwa Ishangai–Kitogo–Kamba–Mutarakwa route, alongside other roads earmarked under the national road improvement programme.

Senator Methu had earlier accused the government of failing to deliver on long-standing promises to tarmac key roads in Nyandarua, using a public event to directly question the President on stalled development projects. Following the announcement of the tenders, the Senator suggested that his remarks had influenced the rapid response from the roads agency.

He stated that the Murungaru–Gilgil road project, which he had raised concerns about during a public address, was subsequently advertised within days, terming it a sign that public pressure can accelerate government action.

The projects fall under the broader KeRRA Lot 9 programme, which includes dozens of road upgrades across the country aimed at improving rural connectivity and easing transportation challenges.

Residents in Nyandarua have for years raised concerns over poor road conditions, which have affected transport of agricultural produce and access to essential services. The latest tender announcements are now being viewed as a possible turning point if implementation proceeds as planned.

The developments also come amid heightened political tension, with increased scrutiny of government delivery promises as leaders position themselves ahead of future political contests.
