Pressure is mounting on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja following the arrest of Nairobi County Chief Officer for Urban Planning Patrick Analo, with political commentators now questioning the level of accountability within City Hall.
Speaking on the latest episode of Political Ringside hosted by Kevin Waswa, political commentator Ken Onyango argued that the arrest of Analo should trigger broader investigations into Nairobi County’s leadership and governance structures.
Analo was recently arrested after detectives reportedly recovered KSh 65.33 million in cash from his residence, a development that has sparked widespread debate about corruption within Nairobi County.
Questions over wealth
During the discussion, Onyango expressed disbelief that a public officer could allegedly keep tens of millions of shillings in cash at home.

He questioned how a county official earning a public salary could accumulate such an amount within a relatively short period.
Host Kevin Waswa noted that a county Chief Officer earns an estimated monthly salary of about KSh 313,000, arguing that legitimate earnings over Analo’s tenure would not match the amount reportedly recovered by investigators.
The commentators suggested that the source of the money should be thoroughly investigated by relevant authorities.
Real estate approvals under scrutiny
The Political Ringside discussion also linked the allegations surrounding Analo to concerns over building approvals and urban planning in Nairobi.
According to Onyango, corruption within planning departments could have serious consequences for public safety if approvals are granted without adherence to engineering and construction standards.
He argued that Nairobi residents have witnessed several building collapses in recent years and called for stricter oversight of approval processes.
The discussion raised concerns that compromised approval systems could expose residents to unnecessary risks while benefiting a small group of developers and officials.
Claims of entrenched corruption
Onyango further alleged that corruption networks within Nairobi County have evolved over time, with public officials increasingly demanding kickbacks from contractors and investors seeking approvals or payments.
He claimed that some contractors are forced to part with significant portions of their earnings before receiving payments for completed projects.
The commentator also alleged that some operations linked to corruption had shifted away from City Hall offices, making them harder to detect.
Sakaja under pressure
A major theme of the discussion was the role of Governor Sakaja as the head of the county administration.
Onyango argued that suspending individual officers would not be enough to address concerns raised by the latest scandal.
Using the Swahili proverb “Samaki huanza kuoza kuanzia kwa kichwa” (a fish rots from the head), he maintained that senior leadership should also be held accountable for actions occurring within departments under their supervision.
He called for investigations into the wider county administration and questioned whether the governor had sufficient oversight mechanisms in place.
County Assembly criticised
The discussion also turned to the Nairobi County Assembly, with Onyango accusing Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of failing to effectively oversee the executive.
He specifically criticised what he described as silence from elected leaders who are expected to act as watchdogs on behalf of residents.
According to Onyango, stronger oversight from MCAs could help detect governance failures before they escalate into major scandals.
Political Ringside debate
The episode of Political Ringside focused heavily on governance, accountability and corruption allegations within Nairobi County following Analo’s arrest.
The programme explored the possible implications of the case on public trust, urban planning, real estate development and the future of leadership at City Hall.
As investigations continue, the arrest has intensified debate over transparency and accountability in Nairobi County, with calls growing for a comprehensive review of how planning approvals and county operations are managed.
