Police in Nakuru County have arrested seven suspected members of a criminal gang during an operation at Githioro Market, following information that a group of suspected criminals was hiding in the busy trading centre.
Officers from Githioro Police Station moved in after receiving intelligence about the suspects’ alleged activities. The police searched several areas within the market before locating the group inside one of the stalls, where they were arrested.
The suspects were identified as Paul Maina Kariuki, also known as Spata, James Kinyanjui Njuguna, Joseph Mburu Mburu alias Mbocho, Victor Kariuki Gichanga alias Kirio, David Chege Chege, Micky Nicky Hutten and Daniel Mwaura Karanja.
Police said the operation also led to the recovery of several crude weapons believed to have been kept at the hideout. The items included pangas and axes, which were seized and recorded as exhibits as investigations continue.
The arrest of the seven comes as police intensify efforts to deal with criminal gangs and prevent violent activities in different parts of Nakuru County. Officers have continued to rely on information from members of the public and intelligence gathering to identify suspected criminals and their hideouts.
Preliminary investigations have also linked one of the suspects, Paul Maina Kariuki alias Spata, to another case being handled by Githioro Police Station.
According to police, Spata was already wanted in connection with a defilement case reported on July 25, 2026. Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the case as they process the suspect alongside the other six men.
The seven suspects remain in police custody as officers complete the necessary procedures before they are taken to court. The recovered weapons will also form part of the evidence expected to be presented as investigations progress.
Police have not indicated whether the suspects are connected to other criminal incidents in the area, and further inquiries are expected to establish whether the group has been involved in additional offences.
The arrests are likely to draw attention from residents and traders around Githioro Market, where concerns over security can affect businesses and daily activities. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the area while pursuing any other individuals who may be linked to criminal activities.
The suspects will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations against them in court once they are arraigned.
