The investigation into the killing of Dr. Victoria Mutiso has taken a new turn after detectives uncovered claims that three police officers were promised a total of Ksh.1.5 million to carry out the murder.
Each of the officers was reportedly expected to receive Ksh.500,000 after completing the alleged assignment. Investigators believe some of the money may have been paid before Dr. Mutiso was killed, raising questions about how the alleged plan was organised and who was behind it.
Detectives are now working to establish the roles played by the different suspects and how the alleged payment was made. The investigation has also focused on a suspect who is believed to have closely followed Dr. Mutiso before her death.
The search for two police officers linked to the case continued on Saturday as senior security officers followed leads on their whereabouts. Central Region security officers led by David Loronyokwe, together with officers from Kikuyu Police Station, visited several police posts as they pursued Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang of Nderi Police Station and Bett Kiplangat Collins of Thogoto Police Station.
The two officers are among the key suspects in the case and reportedly went into hiding after being linked to the murder.
At Thogoto Police Station, officers searched the house where Collins Bett had been living. They seized several items and records which detectives believe could assist in the investigation.
The team later visited Karinde Police Station, where another suspect, Elijah Kimoi, had previously worked. Detectives are also seeking firearm registers from Dagoretti, Nderi, Karinde and Thogoto police stations as they try to trace the movement of firearms and establish how the suspected murder weapon was handled.
The firearm believed to have been used in the killing is currently with investigators. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says the weapon is believed to have been issued to Inspector Sang and was allegedly used by Kimoi to shoot Dr. Mutiso.
Sang had served at Thogoto Police Station for less than six months before being transferred to Nderi Police Station, where he became the Officer Commanding Station.
His transfer in May followed the controversial death of student Gustavo Victor Karani. The incident led to protests by residents and pressure on security authorities to make changes at the station.
Meanwhile, detectives have recovered another Toyota Prado in Kisii County as the search for the suspected killers continues.
The vehicle is believed to be one of two vehicles allegedly used to block the taxi carrying Dr. Mutiso as she travelled to work.
The latest developments are expected to help detectives establish what happened before, during and after the killing as they continue pursuing the suspects and examining evidence linked to the case.
