Twelve people have been apprehended in Siaya after a group of youths attempted to obstruct First Lady Rachel Ruto’s convoy following a women’s economic empowerment event in Siaya town on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of the event at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) grounds, as the convoy headed towards a designated landing and take-off site.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the group attempted to force its way through a secured gate before the situation escalated into a confrontation with police officers deployed to man the entrance.
“Law enforcement officers in Siaya have arrested 12 suspects following a chaotic incident in which a group of rowdy youth attempted to obstruct a convoy of dignitaries in Siaya town,” the DCI said.
The agency said the youths later hurled stones at police officers as officers worked to contain the disturbance and restore order.

According to the DCI, officers responded quickly to prevent the situation from escalating further as the convoy proceeded from the venue.
The 12 people believed to have participated in the disturbance were subsequently apprehended and are being held at a police station in Siaya as detectives process the matter.
The DCI said they are expected to be presented in court as investigations continue into the incident.
The agency further warned that additional people found to have participated in the disturbance could face apprehension and prosecution.
The incident happened as Rachel Ruto attended the women’s empowerment function in Siaya, where she engaged with women on economic empowerment initiatives.
The DCI has not disclosed the identities of those apprehended or provided further details on what may have prompted the attempt to obstruct the convoy.
