Kenyans married to American citizens are being reminded that a genuine relationship remains a valid path to U.S. immigration, even as American authorities intensify efforts to stop marriage fraud.
The issue has gained attention after the arrest of 11 people in the United States over an alleged operation that prosecutors say arranged more than 1,000 fake marriages involving American citizens and foreign nationals.
The scheme is alleged to have continued for more than ten years and involved people in different parts of the country and outside the U.S.
Authorities claim some foreign nationals paid as much as Ksh12.94 million ($100,000) to secure an arranged marriage, while Americans who took part could receive up to Ksh3.88 million ($30,000).
According to prosecutors, the group allegedly took several steps to make the fake relationships appear real. These included arranging wedding ceremonies, producing photographs, creating joint bank and utility accounts, filing taxes together and obtaining insurance policies in both partners’ names.
Investigators also accuse members of the network of preparing participants for immigration interviews. Some applicants were allegedly taught what to say to officers and assisted in submitting Green Card applications containing information that was not true.
The arrests show how seriously U.S. authorities are treating attempts to manipulate the immigration system. U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche has warned that people who try to obtain immigration benefits or citizenship through fraud will face enforcement action.
For Kenyans who are genuinely married to U.S. citizens, the crackdown does not end marriage-based immigration. However, it highlights the importance of being truthful throughout the application process.
A marriage to a U.S. citizen can allow a foreign spouse to apply for lawful permanent residence if the couple meets the required conditions.
It does not, however, automatically make the foreign spouse an American citizen. Citizenship normally comes later after meeting separate legal requirements.
The tougher approach is part of a broader immigration enforcement effort by the Trump administration. The U.S. government has also targeted other alleged abuses of visa rules, including networks linked to birth tourism.
For genuine Kenyan-American couples, the main message is clear: a real marriage and honest documentation remain important. Applicants should be prepared to provide accurate information about their relationship and avoid anyone offering shortcuts or false documents.
Immigration benefits obtained through deception can lead to serious legal consequences, including the loss of status and possible prosecution.
