Taifa Leo puts Ruto on the spot as his early economic record trails Uhuru and Kibaki

According to today’s Taifa Leo headline, President William Ruto is facing growing scrutiny over Kenya’s economic performance, with new comparisons showing his administration lagging behind those of former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki during their first three years in office.

The Kenyan Swahili newspaper highlights that Kenya’s economic growth under President William Ruto has been slower, particularly when measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expansion.

Data featured in the report indicates that Ruto’s administration has recorded a growth rate of 4.6%, which is notably lower than the 5.7% achieved under Uhuru Kenyatta in 2016 and 5.8% under Mwai Kibaki in 2005 during comparable periods.

Despite the slower overall growth, the report acknowledges that Ruto’s government has made some progress in specific sectors.

Notably, there has been an improvement in the creation of informal jobs, especially within the construction industry.

This suggests that while large-scale economic expansion may be underperforming, certain grassroots sectors are experiencing activity and providing livelihoods to many Kenyans.

However, the slower pace of economic growth raises concerns about the broader economic direction of the country.

Analysts argue that GDP growth remains a key indicator of economic health, influencing investment, job creation, and overall national prosperity.

A lower growth rate compared to previous administrations could signal challenges such as high public debt, global economic pressures, or domestic policy hurdles.

The comparison drawn by Taifa Leo is likely to fuel political debate, as economic performance remains a critical benchmark for any administration.

With rising expectations among citizens, the pressure is mounting on President Ruto’s government to accelerate growth and match or surpass the achievements of his predecessors.
