Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has raised fresh questions about the political relationship between President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, claiming that the two could meet in the United States in September as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather pace.
Kuria made the remarks during an interview referenced under the hashtag #CitizenSundayLive, where he challenged Gachagua to publicly clarify whether he has any political agreement with Ruto or plans to enter into one before the next election.
Kuria called on Gachagua to make the matter clear to Kenyans, saying he should publicly declare that he does not currently have a deal with Ruto and will not have one before 2027.
His comments have brought renewed attention to the complicated history between Ruto and Gachagua. The two politicians were key figures in the campaign that led to Ruto’s victory in the 2022 presidential election, with Gachagua taking the position of Deputy President.
Their partnership, however, did not last. Political differences between the two leaders became increasingly public, eventually leading to Gachagua’s removal from office in October 2024.
Since then, Gachagua has positioned himself outside Ruto’s administration, while political discussions about the possibility of new alliances have continued to dominate national debate.
The former deputy president remains an influential figure, particularly in discussions around the political direction of the Mt Kenya region.
Kuria has now added another angle to those discussions by claiming that Ruto and Gachagua could meet in the United States in September.
According to him, such a meeting could open the door for talks between the two sides and possibly lead to renewed political cooperation.
The claim, however, has not been independently confirmed by either Ruto, Gachagua or their representatives. It therefore remains an allegation rather than an established development.
The possibility of any political understanding between the two leaders would nevertheless attract considerable attention. Their past partnership, subsequent fallout and the circumstances surrounding Gachagua’s removal have made their political relationship one of the closely watched stories in Kenya.
With the 2027 election approaching, politicians are already assessing possible alliances and seeking to strengthen their positions.
For Ruto and Gachagua, any move towards dialogue would likely become a major subject of public discussion.
Kuria’s remarks have raised the question of whether the two former political partners could eventually find common ground again. Whether such talks will take place, and whether they could lead to a political agreement, remains to be seen.
