The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a manhunt for Kuresoi North Member of Parliament Alfred Mutai after violent clashes disrupted a youth empowerment meeting in Nakuru County, leaving several people injured and causing damage to property.
According to a statement issued on Friday by police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the incident took place at Sirikwa Umoja Grounds during an event attended by several senior political leaders.
The meeting was reportedly led by Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and was also attended by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Kuresoi North MP Irene Njoki.
Police said the gathering turned chaotic after the arrival of Alfred Mutai, with rival groups allegedly engaging in violent confrontations. Preliminary investigations suggest that suspected supporters linked to the legislator clashed with backers of Governor Kihika, creating panic as gunshots were heard at the venue.
The NPS said several people suffered gunshot injuries during the unrest and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
At least three victims were confirmed to have been shot in the hands and legs before being admitted to Molo Level 4 Hospital.
One of those injured, Job Kiprono, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand, expressed gratitude to members of the public who came to his aid and helped ensure he received medical attention quickly.
Besides the injuries, the clashes also resulted in significant property damage. A bus that had transported tents and chairs for the event was set on fire, while at least three vehicles, including one said to belong to MP Mutai, were vandalized.
The police have named Alfred Mutai as a person of interest and urged him to report to the nearest police station to assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities also said they are pursuing other individuals believed to have participated in the violence.
In its statement, the National Police Service strongly condemned political violence, goonism, and the destruction of property, warning that anyone found responsible, including sponsors and organisers, would face legal action regardless of their political position.
Police also referred to another recent security incident in Chemilil, Muhoroni Sub-County, where armed individuals allegedly stormed Chemilil Academy and injured several people. Three suspects have already been arrested in connection with that case.
The latest events have raised fresh concerns about political tensions ahead of the next election cycle. President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Interior to take firm action against individuals involved in organising political violence or using hired groups to disrupt public gatherings.
Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
