A suspected drug trafficking operation was brought to an end after police officers manning the Suo Roadblock along the Busia–Kisumu Highway intercepted two men transporting cannabis sativa on a motorcycle.
The incident unfolded during a routine security check when officers stopped the motorcycle for inspection.
As they carried out their duties, they noticed something unusual about the passenger seated at the back. What initially appeared to be ordinary luggage turned out to be several packages tightly strapped to his back.
Upon closer inspection, officers discovered that the packages contained cannabis sativa.
The eight packages had been carefully secured using straps in what appeared to be an attempt to avoid detection during the journey. However, the effort failed as the officers quickly identified the suspicious load and proceeded with a thorough search.
The search did not end there. Police officers also examined a black travel bag that was being carried by the suspects. Inside the bag, they found additional packages of cannabis, increasing the amount of the narcotic substance recovered during the operation.
According to authorities, the total quantity of cannabis seized weighed 13.9 kilograms. The recovered drugs are estimated to have a street value of about Sh417,000.
The seizure is considered a significant success in ongoing efforts to curb the transportation and distribution of illegal drugs along major highways.
The two suspects were identified as Mathayo Mwanzi Anyiga and Moses Nyamaka. Following their arrest, they were taken into police custody where they are currently undergoing processing ahead of their expected court appearance.
Police also impounded the motorcycle that was being used to transport the drugs. Both the motorcycle and the recovered narcotics are being held as exhibits as investigations continue.
The arrest highlights the role of roadblocks and routine inspections in detecting illegal activities that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Officers stationed along major transport routes continue to monitor vehicles and passengers in a bid to prevent the movement of narcotics and other illegal goods across different parts of the country.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to fighting drug trafficking and have warned those involved in the trade that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant.
Investigations into the case are ongoing as police prepare to present the suspects before court.
