After that, he moved to Norwich, England, where he attended the University of East Anglia and graduated with a law degree, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
In the 1980s, Charles’s academic journey continued as he studied at the University of London, where he completed his Master of Laws (LLM). By 1983, he had been called to the Bar of England and Wales, solidifying his place in the legal profession.

A Legal Career that Shaped Kenya’s Legal Framework
Nyachae’s career in law began in earnest when he returned to Kenya. In 1984, he joined the Attorney General’s Chambers in Nairobi, where he worked as a State Counsel.
His role involved legislative drafting, commercial law, and litigation, and he quickly gained a reputation as a sharp, detail-oriented lawyer.
In 1986, Nyachae took a bold step and founded his own law firm, Nyachae & Company Advocates.
Over time, the firm grew and became well-respected in the legal community, handling a wide range of cases, including high-profile ones.

A Voice for Constitutional Reform
Nyachae’s commitment to public service saw him take on a number of influential roles. Between 1991 and 1992, he served as a council member of the Law Society of Kenya and was also the chairperson of the International Commission of Jurists, Kenya Section.
But it was his involvement with the Kenya Law Reform Commission from 1999 to 2003 that would have the most lasting impact on the country. In this role, he contributed significantly to shaping Kenya’s legal framework.
However, it wasn’t just about law for Nyachae. He was deeply involved in the political reform processes in the country.
His most significant contribution came when he chaired the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) from 2010 to 2015.
This role saw him working closely with others to help implement the new 2010 Constitution, which brought about significant changes to the way Kenya was governed.

In 2018, Charles Nyachae’s experience was recognized beyond Kenya’s borders when he was appointed as a judge at the East African Court of Justice.
For five years, he served on the First Instance Division, dealing with cases that impacted the East African Community. He resigned in November 2023, with the East African Community thanking him for his dedicated service.
Nyachae’s work at this level allowed him to see firsthand the legal and political challenges that affect not just Kenya but the entire East African region.
Stepping Up to Lead IEBC
Now, Charles Nyachae is eyeing the chairperson’s seat at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
