Ethiopia and AfDB Join Forces to Transform Bishoftu International Airport into a Regional Aviation Hub

In a landmark move for Ethiopia’s aviation and economic landscape, Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to develop Bishoftu International Airport through a massive $7.8 billion project. Announced on March 19, 2025, this ambitious deal aims to catapult the country’s aviation capacity to new heights, positioning Ethiopia as a key player in regional air connectivity.

The new state-of-the-art airport is set to dramatically increase Ethiopia’s annual passenger capacity, soaring from 17 million to an impressive 60 million by 2040. This expansion is expected to revolutionize aviation services, supercharge tourism, and strengthen ties across the region, making Bishoftu a vital hub for travelers and trade.

Beyond its impact on air travel, the project promises a significant economic boost. Thousands of jobs are anticipated to be created during construction and operation, while the upgraded infrastructure is poised to attract a wave of foreign investment. The AfDB has underscored its commitment to Ethiopia’s growth, pledging ongoing support for the nation’s broader economic transformation.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step forward for Ethiopia, blending cutting-edge infrastructure with strategic vision to unlock new opportunities for development and global connectivity.
