The death of Kennedy Ngeno has taken a new turn after CCTV footage emerged showing the moments before he was fatally stabbed during an apparent road rage confrontation along Mombasa Road near Nyayo Stadium.
The incident, which happened in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, has attracted widespread attention as investigators continue to piece together what happened. The main suspect has already been arrested while the case remains under investigation.
According to footage that has since circulated online and reviewed by Kenya Digest, the confrontation began at around 4am when three vehicles suddenly stopped along the busy highway. One vehicle pulled over a short distance ahead while a Suzuki taxi and a Toyota Wish stopped next to each other.
The video shows the driver of the Suzuki taxi getting out of his vehicle and walking toward a white car in which Kennedy Ngeno was seated. The suspect then appeared to use his mobile phone to record the people inside the vehicle.
However, people from the other two vehicles, who appeared to know one another, did not welcome the recording. A confrontation quickly developed as some members of the group questioned why they were being filmed.
At one point, one of the individuals appeared to slap at the suspect’s phone in what seemed to be an attempt to stop him from recording the scene. The exchange became increasingly tense as more people gathered around the vehicles.
The footage shows the taxi driver retreating to his vehicle, where he appeared to warn the group that he would produce an object. Despite the warning, those confronting him did not move away and instead remained at the scene.
Within moments, the disagreement turned violent. The suspect, who was dressed in a black tracksuit and hoodie, allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the individuals as the confrontation became physical.
The CCTV footage then shows the suspect shifting his attention to Kennedy Ngeno, who had moved some distance away while the struggle involving the other individuals continued. Although Ngeno appeared to be walking away from the confrontation, the suspect allegedly chased after him before stabbing him several times in the chest.
Ngeno collapsed shortly after the attack as people nearby rushed toward him. The footage also appears to show the suspect recording the aftermath while claiming that he had been attacked and had acted in self-defence.
After filming the scene, the suspect returned to his Suzuki taxi and slowly drove away as members of the public and those who had been at the scene carried the badly injured Ngeno into the white vehicle in an attempt to save his life.
Kenya Digest has established that Ngeno was first taken to Mbagathi Hospital for emergency treatment. However, the facility was reportedly unable to manage his condition, leading to his transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital. Sadly, doctors at the referral hospital pronounced him dead on arrival.
The suspect’s lawyer has dismissed claims that his client attempted to escape after the incident. According to the lawyer, the suspect voluntarily presented himself at a police station after the confrontation.
The defence also argues that the suspect had been surrounded by several people and acted in self-defence during the incident.
Meanwhile, a postmortem examination has confirmed that Kennedy Ngeno died from multiple stab wounds. The examination found that one of the injuries, located near his heart, proved fatal.
The release of the CCTV footage has provided investigators with additional evidence as they continue to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal confrontation. The incident has also renewed public concern over rising cases of violence during road disputes, with many calling for calm and restraint whenever disagreements occur on Kenyan roads.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, while the family of Kennedy Ngeno continues to seek justice following the tragic incident that claimed the young man’s life.
