Two persons of interest linked to a series of robberies in Kisumu have been apprehended after detectives pursued their black Toyota Prado and shot out its tyres, forcing the vehicle to crash into an electric pole.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the two, identified as William Onyango Odhiambo and Felix Owino Onyango, were apprehended after the high-speed chase through Kisumu town.

The operation followed a robbery report by a woman who told police that she and her friends had been robbed of five mobile phones by individuals travelling in a black Toyota Prado.

Detectives from Kisumu Central launched a search after receiving information linking the vehicle to the reported robbery.

How the high-speed chase unfolded

According to the DCI, detectives traced the vehicle, registration number KDX 642Y, and attempted to intercept it.

However, the driver defied police orders to stop and accelerated, triggering a pursuit through the town.

Officers continued chasing the vehicle as the driver ignored their instructions to pull over.

The detectives eventually fired at the vehicle’s tyres, puncturing them near Oile Park.

With its tyres deflated, the Prado veered out of control and crashed into an electric pole, damaging its front-right side and bringing the attempted getaway to an end.

The two persons of interest were apprehended as they attempted to flee from the wreckage.

The incident comes amid ongoing police operations targeting robbery and mobile phone theft networks in Kisumu, including a previous crackdown that saw detectives recover mobile phones and dismantle a suspected phone theft syndicate in the city.

Pistol and mobile phones recovered

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a black pistol and three mobile phones, which detectives secured as exhibits to support investigations.

The DCI said investigations were ongoing to establish the two individuals’ possible links to a series of robberies, including incidents believed to involve cross-border criminal networks.

The latest operation follows other police efforts to address robbery and phone-snatching incidents in the lakeside city, where officers have continued pursuing leads to identify individuals linked to reported cases. In September, police also reported apprehending a person of interest linked to robbery and mobile phone snatching incidents in Kisumu.

The two individuals remain in custody undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.

The DCI reiterated its commitment to pursuing criminal networks and protecting the safety and security of Kenyans as investigations continue.
