“Will I be safe?” Albert Ojwang’s last question before mysteriously dying in police custody

Phone call from a place of events

A phone call conversation between Albert Ojwang and a colleague shortly after his arrest in Homa Bay has resurfaced online, raising fresh concerns over his reported death while in police custody.

The audio, posted by X influencer Brian Yuri, captures a distressed Ojwang speaking as he was being transported by Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers from Homa Bay to Nairobi. His voice is anxious and worried as he asks, “Will I be safe?”

At one point, Ojwang asks his colleague if he has ever been locked up or arrested before, seemingly searching for reassurance. The colleague responds calmly, saying, “Remand is safe. Central is one of the best police stations.”

Ojwang’s friend then promises, “Tomorrow I will mobilize fellow colleagues to come for you,” in an attempt to comfort him.

Hours after the call, Ojwang’s father reported that his son had died at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. The family has not yet seen his body, and the police have not released an official statement explaining the circumstances of Ojwang’s death.

The news has sparked public outrage and demands for justice from human rights groups who are calling for an independent investigation into the incident.

The National Police Service has remained silent on the leaked conversation and has not provided any clarity on Ojwang’s condition or the events leading to his death.

The resurfaced phone call has intensified scrutiny on police conduct in Kenya, especially regarding the treatment of detainees during transfers between counties. Ojwang’s final question, “Will I be safe?” now stands as a haunting reminder of concerns about safety and accountability in police custody.
