Nearly two years after the sudden loss of world record marathoner Kelvin Kiptum, his family says they are still struggling emotionally and financially. His father, Mzee Samson Cheruiyot, has spoken out in an emotional video that is circulating on social media, sharing the pain he and his wife continue to endure since their son’s death.
Kelvin Kiptum died in a tragic road accident in February 2024 alongside his Rwandan coach. He was laid to rest on February 23, 2024, in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and national leaders.
While the nation continues to honor his achievements, his parents say their personal lives have become harder, not easier, since his passing.
Standing beside his late son’s grave, Mzee Cheruiyot accused his daughter-in-law, Asenath Kiptum, and a government official of denying the family access to Kelvin’s money.

He claimed that the two traveled to Rotterdam in April 2024, about two months after Kelvin’s death, where they allegedly mismanaged funds that should have benefited the family.
“I have gone through a lot. As Kiptum’s parents, we have been mistreated. They pretended to be in charge of Kelvin’s affairs and frustrated us,” he said.
He further expressed frustration over Kelvin’s car, which has reportedly remained at a police station since the accident. According to Mzee Cheruiyot, the family has not been given clear information about the vehicle or why it has not been released.
“Why hasn’t the police released the car almost two years later? Asenath knows everything about that car. We haven’t received any support or funds from Kelvin’s estate,” he lamented.
The video has triggered strong reactions across Kenya, with many social media users expressing sympathy for the grieving parents. Kenyans have called for transparency, fairness, and respect in handling Kelvin Kiptum’s estate.
Several commenters urged Asenath Kiptum to reconcile with her in-laws and ensure that Kelvin’s parents are supported during this difficult time.
Others stressed that the family deserves peace and dignity, especially given the global pride Kelvin brought to Kenya through his remarkable achievements in athletics.
Many people believe that honoring his legacy should also include taking care of those he left behind.
