Police officers in Voi have arrested three individuals believed to be part of a notorious highway robbery gang that had managed to evade capture for some time.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 1, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the suspects were apprehended following a surveillance operation along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
The three, identified as Joseph Macharia Mwangi, 40, Peter Muchemi Maina, 36, and Agnes Malemba Mshenga, 32, were intercepted while traveling in a white Subaru Legacy.
“The suspects were arrested at Vacani Resort while in a white Subaru Legacy with registration number KCJ 842Z. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered three sets of reflective number plates—KCR 879U, KCA 583L, and KAZ 946L,” the statement read.
Authorities also seized various items from the vehicle, including jungle uniforms, a kitchen knife, two Maasai swords, and a toolkit containing spanners, a jack, pressure pumps, puncture repair equipment, brake pads, and tools commonly used for break-ins.
The suspects are currently being held at Voi Police Station as investigations continue, with plans underway to present them in court.
