Authorities in Nyamira County have arrested three individuals accused of assaulting a woman during a burial ceremony. The arrests, made on Monday, March 24, followed public outrage after a video of the incident went viral online.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the attack occurred on Friday, March 21, 2025. Investigators revealed that the suspects allegedly forced the woman to take part in traditional burial rituals against her will.

The victim had been married to the deceased for nine years before their separation. According to the DCI, she had been out of contact with her ex-husband’s family until his mother reached out, asking her to bring their children to his burial after he died in a road accident.

“As the funeral proceedings took place, members of the deceased’s family confronted the woman, demanding that she participate in burial rites, including throwing soil into the grave. When she refused, the situation turned violent, and she was subjected to a brutal attack, with accusations being leveled against her regarding her ex-husband’s death,” the DCI reported.

The suspects, identified as Robert Pokea Sarudi (43), Bismark Ondiek Sarudi (40), and Lameck Ogindo Osoro (27), were arrested in Mwongorisi sub-location and taken to Kiambere Police Station for processing. They are set to face legal proceedings in court.

Meanwhile, detectives are pursuing other individuals believed to have been involved in the assault.
