Shots fired as Kawira Mwangaza’s event disrupted

A charity event in Meru County turned chaotic on Sunday, May 18, after police stormed the venue with teargas and fired shots in the air, forcing people to flee. The event, led by former governor Kawira Mwangaza, ended in fear and confusion.

Kawira was in Kiguchwa for her Operation Okolea outreach program, which helps families in need. But things took a different turn when a large number of police officers showed up and stopped the event. Teargas filled the air and people ran for safety.

One of Kawira’s drivers was seriously injured. He was hit on the head and rushed for medical care. Speaking later at a church service, Kawira said she had seen signs that something was going to go wrong. “Can you believe they sent over 2,000 police officers to stop your bishop?” she asked the congregation.

The police have not explained why they used such force to stop a charity event. But many in the region are asking hard questions. Why did the government respond this way? And why has Deputy President Kithure Kindiki remained silent?

Kindiki comes from the neighboring county of Tharaka Nithi and is the highest-ranking leader from the Mt Kenya East region. As Deputy President, he is seen by many as just a step away from the presidency. His voice carries weight.

But since the incident, Kindiki has not said a word about the matter. His silence has left many wondering—was he behind the crackdown, or is he avoiding taking sides?

Kawira, who was impeached as governor last year, remains active in local politics and is said to be forming her own party. Her growing popularity may be causing discomfort for some in power.

As 2027 politics start to take shape, what is happening in Meru could signal deeper political tensions in Mt Kenya East. For now, the spotlight remains on Deputy President Kindiki. His next move could speak volumes.
