Rare unity as MPs unanimously go after Sakaja’s jugular

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is under fire after Members of Parliament from both ODM and UDA joined hands to accuse him of incompetence, corruption, and lack of development in the city.

In a rare show of unity, six MPs from different political sides came together in a live TV discussion where they expressed frustration with how Sakaja is running Nairobi. They said development has stalled and that the governor has ignored them completely.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino led the attack, saying the governor has failed the people of Nairobi. “When the President came to tour Nairobi, there were projects going on, but none were from the county.

All Sakaja could ask for was a chapati-making machine. That’s a joke. People are struggling and he’s busy playing PR games,” said Babu.

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi said Nairobi receives over Sh42 billion, yet very little can be seen on the ground. “The Auditor General’s report shows nothing is being spent on development. Where is the money going? It’s like the county is leaking money,” said Wanyonyi.

Other MPs including Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West), Peter Orero (Kibra), Felix Odiwuor aka Jalang’o (Lang’ata), and Amos Mwago (Starehe) said they have tried many times to work with the governor, but he doesn’t pick calls, attend meetings or consult them on important issues.

Mwago said some projects have stalled simply because he criticized the county. “If you don’t praise him, he locks you out,” he said.

Orero said Sakaja prefers to work with MCAs and senators while ignoring MPs who are closer to the people. “He acts like we’re enemies, yet we are all elected to serve the same Nairobians,” Orero said.

The MPs said Nairobi is struggling with garbage, poor roads, lack of clean toilets in slums, and unfinished ECDEs, yet the county has enough money to solve these problems.

As 2027 nears, the leaders hinted at coming together to challenge Sakaja at the ballot. They said Nairobi deserves better leadership—one that listens, acts, and delivers.
