Quickmart Supermarket speaks over reports 30 bodies were retrieved in OTC

Quickmart Supermarket has issued a press statement denying that there were people who got killed inside its OTC branch in Nairobi, following widespread social media reports claiming that up to 30 bodies had been retrieved from the store.

In an official statement released on June 26, 2025, the retail chain confirmed that while its OTC and Ruiru branches were affected by demonstrations held on June 25, there were no fatalities or injuries reported at either location.

“Contrary to misleading information circulating on digital platforms, we wish to assure the public that no staff, customers, or any other individuals were injured or deceased at the two outlets,” the statement read.

The supermarket emphasized that the safety and security of its employees, customers, and the wider community remain top priorities. Quickmart also noted that it is taking all necessary steps to restore normal operations and urged customers from the affected branches to access services from nearby locations.

The clarification comes in the wake of chaotic nationwide protests that turned deadly in several cities, including Nairobi. The demonstrations—sparked by anger over a controversial tax bill and the recent death of activist Albert Ojwang in police custody—resulted in at least 16 confirmed deaths across the country, most reportedly caused by police action.

Reports of violence and looting near the OTC branch had raised concerns, with unverified posts online claiming mass casualties inside the supermarket. Quickmart has dismissed those reports as false and misleading.

“We remain dedicated to caring for our community and will continue to keep the public informed as we work towards stability and recovery,” the statement concluded.

Authorities are still assessing the full impact of the unrest as the nation grapples with heightened political tension and calls for accountability over protest-related deaths.
