Orengo makes first public appearance with Ruto and Raila after long absence

Siaya Governor James Orengo, on Friday, August 8, 2025, made his first public appearance after weeks of absence and silence.

He attended the funeral service of the late veteran politician, Phoebe Asiyo, held in Rachuonyo, Homa Bay County.

Orengo joined several leaders, including President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, ODM Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, among others, to pay tribute to the pioneer woman MP, diplomat, and champion of gender equality.

This marked Governor Orengo’s first public outing since returning from abroad after a period away from public engagements.
His presence at the funeral helped ease concerns among residents and supporters who had been awaiting updates on his well-being.

The funeral brought together leaders and members of the public united in mourning the passing of Phoebe Asiyo, who left a lasting legacy in public service and women’s empowerment.

Governor Orengo’s attendance alongside other dignitaries reflected the respect held for the late leader and her significant contributions to the country.

Public concern during absence

Governor Orengo’s prolonged absence had caused speculation and concern among local leaders, MPs, and residents of Siaya County.
Nyatike Member of Parliament Tom Odege had publicly called on Orengo to address the people directly about his whereabouts and health to stop misinformation from spreading.

“The governor’s inability to address this issue has escalated the matter to become one of public concern, because he should have come out publicly and set the record straight,” Odege said.

Odege noted that silence was fueling rumours and that the people of Siaya deserved clarity about their governor’s situation.

The absence also sparked false reports, including a fake resignation letter that Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode dismissed as misinformation aimed at discrediting the governor.

Orengo’s appearance at the funeral is expected to reassure the public and provide some calm after weeks of uncertainty.

Residents of Siaya and supporters will be hoping for further updates soon to put an end to speculation and focus on county development.
