Nelson Havi tells off Matiang’i over 2027 presidency talk

Former LSK President Nelson Havi has come out strongly against former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i following talk that Matiang’i could be eyeing the presidency in 2027.

In a message he posted on social media shortly after returning from the United States, Havi accused Matiang’i of being behind the killing of many young men and women during his time in government.

Havi claimed that victims were dumped in places like River Yala, River Donyo Sabuk, Tana River, Aberdare Forest, Amboseli and Tsavo parks.

He asked Kenyans not to forget what happened during Matiang’i’s time at the Interior Ministry. Havi said Matiang’i should face trial and not be allowed to run for president.

“Fred Matiang’i killed and dumped youthful men and women in River Yala, River Donyo Sabuk, Tana River, Aberdare National Park, Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Park. Have we forgotten all that? He should stand trial for mass murder and not run for President,” Nelson Havi wrote on X.

Matiang’i who hails from Gusii Land which has over 1.5 million registered voters according to IEBC 2022 data is believed to be considering a return to politics.

His name has been mentioned in several political circles as a possible strong candidate for 2027. There are talks that he may enjoy the support of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and possibly even former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Some also believe that Kalonzo Musyoka and a section of the opposition might back him.

So far Matiang’i has not responded to Havi’s statements. His close allies say he will speak when the time is right.

The remarks by Havi have stirred fresh debate on the past actions of government during Matiang’i’s time and what role he may have played. As the road to 2027 begins to take shape, the issues of justice, truth and leadership are likely to be at the center of the conversations around who should lead Kenya next.
