A new opinion poll by Mwelekeo Insights has revealed what young women in Nairobi really think about marriage and the answers might surprise you.

The survey, which focused on women aged 30 and below, showed that money matters more than romance for many. In fact, 51% said they’d be open to a polygamous marriage but only if it meant a better life financially.

For them, it’s less about sharing a husband and more about sharing the bills.Career is clearly a big deal. A strong 80% said they’d rather focus on building their careers and becoming financially stable before thinking about marriage.

For most, chasing dreams comes before walking down the aisle.Still, the pressure is real. Half of the women admitted they feel some kind of push from society to settle down, even if they’re not ready. Parents, relatives, and even friends still ask, “So when are you getting married?”And then there’s the question of freedom.

About 60% believe marriage might come with restrictions less time for themselves, fewer choices, and more expectations. It’s a concern that’s keeping many from rushing into commitment.

When it comes to timing, only 30% of those thinking about marriage said they’d want to tie the knot before hitting 30. It seems more and more women are in no hurry they’d rather take their time, figure things out, and settle down when they feel truly ready.

Mwelekeo Insights says the results show a shift in how young Nairobi women view marriage today. They’re thinking long term, weighing their options, and putting themselves first and that’s a story worth listening to.
