Many people build their careers quietly through years of steady work before one unexpected moment brings their story into the spotlight.
This has been the journey of Joseph Rutebeza, widely known as Joseph Cutz, a professional barber whose passion and patience have shaped his path over more than ten years. His work, which began far from Nairobi, has slowly grown into a respected brand that now attracts attention from both local and international figures.
Joseph’s barbering journey started in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Like many young people with a skill, he relied on practice, consistency, and word of mouth to grow.
Cutting hair was not just a job for him but a craft that required discipline and care. Over time, he sharpened his technique and learned how to work with different hair types and styles. His decision to later move to Kenya opened a new chapter, one that came with both challenges and opportunities.
After settling in Nairobi, Joseph established a physical kinyozi in Lavington. From this location, he has served a wide range of clients.
These include ordinary residents who walk in for regular grooming as well as politicians and celebrities who value privacy and quality service.
His reputation has grown steadily, built on professionalism rather than hype. Those who visit his shop often return, impressed by his attention to detail and calm approach.
Social media has also played an important role in his growth. Joseph uses platforms like Instagram to display his work and connect with potential clients. This online presence recently led to a life changing moment.
One ordinary day, he noticed a message in his direct messages. As he explains, “I checked my DM and someone was asking about my work and my rates. He then went on to ask me if I can shave iShowSpeed.” At first, it seemed like a normal inquiry, but the conversation quickly took a surprising turn.
Joseph soon realized that the person messaging him was not just any client but part of iShowSpeed’s management team. The importance of discretion was made clear from the beginning.
“That is when it hit that it was actually Speed’s manager who had reached out to him,” he recalls.
The manager requested privacy until the visit was over. Joseph agreed without hesitation, saying, “He told me that I should not share anything until after Speed is out of the country. I promised him I would do that.”
When the popular streamer arrived in Kenya, Joseph was invited to the hotel where Speed and his crew were staying. There, he provided haircuts to Speed and the entire team. The experience left a lasting impression on him.
“Speed is a very easy person. He was jovial throughout, he took videos and shared them on his socials. He also told me to take as many as I could,” Joseph says, describing the relaxed atmosphere.
Looking back, Joseph describes the experience as a major milestone. The barber says that moment was the highlight of his career, and he looks forward to shaving more people and expand his business. His ambitions remain strong and hopeful.
“I shave everyone. This year I look forward to shaving President Ruto. I hope it will happen,” he says with a smile.
Through patience, skill, and humility, Joseph Cutz continues to shape his future one haircut at a time.
