Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka urged young Kenyans, particularly Generation Z, to exercise their constitutional right to vote and oust President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, Kalonzo referenced Ruto’s controversial directive to police to shoot violent protesters in the legs, urging voters to “shoot Ruto at the ballot” to ensure he does not secure a second term.

Kalonzo, who formally accepted the WPF presidential nomination for 2027, outlined a policy platform centred on reducing taxes, creating a youth enterprise fund, lowering fuel and electricity costs, improving education funding, and enhancing healthcare.

He also pledged to protect freedom of expression and end abductions, emphasising “justice, opportunity, and dignity for all.” The slogan “Wantam,” popularised to signal Ruto’s removal, was a rallying cry at the event.

The conference drew prominent opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and leaders from other parties, signalling a potential coalition against Ruto’s administration.

Kalonzo’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions, with public discontent over economic policies like the Affordable Housing Levy and recent protests.

Political analyst Jane Wambui noted, “Kalonzo’s call taps into widespread frustration, especially among youth, but translating rhetoric into votes will require a unified opposition and robust voter turnout.” Kenya’s electoral commission reports that only 22.1 million voters were registered in 2022, with youth registration lagging.

As Kenya approaches the 2027 election, Kalonzo’s campaign will likely focus on mobilising young voters and addressing economic grievances. Observers say the opposition’s ability to coalesce and counter Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance will be critical.
