A senior cardiologist at Devamatha Hospital in India has disclosed the medical complications that led to the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Dr. Alphonse, one of the lead specialists who attended to Odinga, said the veteran leader was battling diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease.
She explained that his condition was already advanced when he arrived at the hospital, showing severe swelling in his right leg.
“Whatever information we got is that he was diabetic, hypertensive, and a chronic kidney disease patient,” Dr. Alphonse told reporters Wednesday. “You could see significant oedema of the right lower limb.”
The doctor said a team of experts immediately began emergency treatment, including continuous CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“Despite our continued CPR and other measures, we couldn’t make him survive,” she said. “We are very sorry to inform you that he is no more with us, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family and the people of Kenya.”
Dr. Alphonse noted that chronic illnesses such as diabetes and kidney disease often cause life-threatening complications, particularly in elderly patients.
“We did everything humanly possible. His condition was very complicated, but we gave our best,” she added.
Hospital staff said Odinga’s final moments were spent under constant medical supervision as doctors fought to save his life.
His remains are expected to be flown back to Kenya on Thursday, October 16, where preparations for a state funeral are underway.
Leaders and citizens across the world have continued to send condolences, describing Odinga as a champion of democracy and justice whose legacy will endure.
