Husband of slain M-Pesa agent becomes prime suspect

A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) probe has revealed that Zachary Wambugu, the husband of slain M-Pesa agent Hannah Waithera, was at the scene of the crime on the day she disappeared.

According to investigators, forensic analysis of phone data, including triangulation, placed both Wambugu’s and Waithera’s mobile phones in the same location on May 21 the day Waithera was last seen. Detectives say this development significantly deepens suspicion over Wambugu’s role in her death.

Although Wambugu initially appeared cooperative, reporting his wife missing on the same day, police allege he misled investigators by claiming that his friends had tracked Waithera’s phone moving toward Kijabe, in the direction of Nairobi.

That claim, authorities say, contradicted forensic evidence that eventually led police to the decomposing body of Waithera, discovered on May 26 at Technology Farm in Nakuru West Sub-County.

“What began as a routine missing person report has since escalated into a full-scale murder investigation,” said DCI Corporal Richard Kipsang during Wambugu’s arraignment on Tuesday, June 3.

Kipsang also told the court that Wambugu filed the disappearance report just two hours after a separate incident of theft by a servant had been reported, raising further questions about his intentions.

Police have asked the court to detain Wambugu for 21 days to allow for completion of forensic tests, collection of witness statements, retrieval of CCTV footage, and full analysis of mobile phone data.

Wambugu, through his lawyer, opposed the application, arguing that he has fully cooperated with authorities and maintains his innocence. A ruling on the application is expected Wednesday.
