Harambee Stars Slip in FIFA Rankings as Starlets Make Historic Climb

Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, has dropped three places in the latest FIFA rankings, now sitting at position 111 globally. This marks a decline from their previous ranking of 108, with their total points reducing from 1,190 to 1,179.

The slip follows a disappointing international window in March, where Kenya failed to secure a victory in two FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team settled for a 3-3 draw against The Gambia in an away match before suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Gabon. These were the first games under new head coach Benni McCarthy, who took charge on March 3.

FIFA is set to release the next rankings on July 10, but Kenya will not have another competitive fixture before then, as the upcoming June FIFA international window for the CAF region is designated for friendly matches.

CECAFA Region Rankings

In the CECAFA region, Uganda remains the highest-ranked team despite dropping one spot to 89th. Tanzania follows in second place, falling from position 106 to 107. Kenya remains the third-best team in the region.

The only team in the CECAFA bloc to register an improvement was Somalia, which moved up one place to 201 after securing a historic 0-0 draw away to Guinea before a 2-0 defeat to Botswana in World Cup qualifiers.

Other CECAFA teams and their new rankings include:

  • Sudan – 114 (previously 113)
  • Rwanda – 130 (previously 124)
  • Burundi – 140 (previously 139)
  • Ethiopia – 147 (previously 146)
  • South Sudan – 170 (unchanged)
  • Djibouti – 192 (previously 191)

Eritrea remains unranked, having not played an international match since January 2020.

Africa’s Top-Ranked Teams

On the continental stage, Harambee Stars have slipped to 27th in Africa, overtaken by Namibia (108) and Mauritania (110).

Morocco continues to lead as Africa’s highest-ranked team, moving up two places to 12th in the world. Senegal follows at 19th, while Egypt sits in third place on the continent at position 32. Algeria (36) and Ivory Coast (41) complete Africa’s top five.

Harambee Starlets Soar in FIFA Rankings

While the men’s team faced a setback, the national women’s team, Harambee Starlets, recorded a significant rise in the latest FIFA women’s rankings. Starlets climbed seven positions to rank 142nd globally, making them the biggest movers in the world during this ranking cycle.

Their impressive rise was fueled by a strong performance against Tunisia in the 2026 AFCON qualifiers in February. The Kenyan women held Tunisia to a goalless draw at home before securing a historic 1-0 victory away—the first time a Kenyan football team has won a competitive match against North African opposition.

As a result, the Starlets gained 41.31 additional points, increasing their total from 1,020 to 1,061.31. Conversely, Tunisia suffered the biggest drop globally, falling 11 places after losing 43.79 points.

In Africa, Starlets have improved from 30th to 24th and are now the third-best-ranked CECAFA team, overtaking Uganda (148th). Ethiopia (128th) and Tanzania (138th) remain the only CECAFA nations ranked above Kenya in the women’s category.

Other CECAFA women’s team rankings:

  • Rwanda – 165 (up from 168)
  • Burundi – 178 (unchanged)
  • South Sudan – 193 (unchanged)
  • Djibouti – 195 (unchanged)

Meanwhile, the women’s teams of Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan remain unranked.

Starlets Eye Further Rise in Upcoming Matches

The next FIFA women’s rankings will be published on June 12, 2025. Starlets have a chance to climb even higher with two upcoming friendly matches against Ivory Coast on April 4 and April 7. The Ivorian women’s team is currently ranked 71st globally.

Additionally, the May-June FIFA window presents another opportunity for Starlets to improve their standing with positive results.
