CUE flags 15 institutions offering degrees without authorization

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has raised concerns over fifteen institutions allegedly offering degree and postgraduate diploma programs without proper authorization.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, March 11, CUE cautioned the public against enrolling in these institutions, stating that they lacked the required approval to operate.

“The Commission has established that the following institutions are offering degree and postgraduate diploma programs without Grant of Authority to operate,” the notice read in part.

The flagged institutions include Eldoret Bible College (Uasin Gishu), Al-Munawwarah College (Mombasa), Grace Life Bible College (Vihiga), Africa Theological Seminary (Kitale), Regions Beyond Ministry Bible College (Thika), Baraton College (Kapsabet), The Africa Talent University (Kisumu), and Breakthrough Bible College (Nairobi).

Others are Theophilus Theological College (Kiambu), Northwestern Christian University (Kakamega), Logos University (Kakamega), Harvest Land University (Kisumu), Word of Faith Bible College (Vihiga), Kenya Anglican University-Kanyuambora (Embu), and The East African University Bradgate International University (Nyeri).

CUE emphasized that any academic qualifications obtained from unauthorized institutions would not be recognized in Kenya.

“For the avoidance of doubt, any institution operating as a university or degree-awarding entity and which does not appear on the Commission’s list of approved institutions is illegal, and their degree qualifications will not be recognized in Kenya,” CUE stated.

This announcement comes just days after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided a graduation ceremony at Northwestern Christian University in Mombasa. The institution’s Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor were arrested following claims that it was operating without accreditation.

According to a statement by DCI, CUE had filed a complaint against the university, prompting authorities to intervene. Law enforcement officers also confiscated academic certificates that were being issued at the event.

The commission continues to urge students to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling to avoid acquiring unrecognized academic qualifications.
