Bomet University College Prepares for Historic Transition to University Status

Bomet University College is on track to receive its charter and transition into a fully-fledged university later this year. Speaking at the institution’s Fourth Annual International Innovation Conference, University Council Chairperson Prof. Simon Mitema assured stakeholders that the charter award process is progressing smoothly, with the goal of securing approval by August, ahead of the December graduation.

“We are committed to ensuring that all necessary requirements for charter acquisition are in place by August, allowing this year’s students to graduate from here in December,” Professor Mitema stated during the conference.

Currently a constituent college of Moi University, Bomet University College has long sought autonomy due to logistical challenges posed by the distance between Bomet and the main Moi University campus in Eldoret. The move towards self-governance is expected to enhance operational efficiency and streamline academic programs tailored to the institution’s focus areas.

The Fourth Annual International Innovation Conference coincided with the second Open Day and Innovation Competition, highlighting the institution’s commitment to research and sustainability. Themed “Commercialization for Sustainability,” the event aligned with Bomet University College’s slogan, ‘Greening for Sustainability.’ It provided a platform for innovators to showcase their projects, exchange ideas, and gain insights from industry experts.

Bomet Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok reiterated his support for the institution’s bid for university status, pledging his administration’s commitment to fulfilling the necessary charter requirements.

“As Governor, I will work closely with the university to achieve charter status by August,” Prof. Barchok affirmed.

The upcoming charter approval marks a significant milestone in Bomet University College’s journey, positioning it as a key player in higher education and innovation within the region.
