Bobi Wine slips past police roadblocks undetected as viral selfie shocks Uganda

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has stunned social media after a selfie showed him slipping past police roadblocks without being noticed, even though security has been hunting him since the disputed January 15 election.

The image, now trending online, shows Wine seated inside a vehicle at a roadblock with armed officers standing nearby, apparently unaware the man they were pursuing was right in front of them.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, went into hiding after security forces raided his home following the election that incumbent President Yoweri Museveni won with a wide margin amid allegations of fraud.

His rural visit to Gomba District caught both his supporters and security off guard. Wine later explained he wanted to see his elderly mother and sisters, a visit he described as deeply personal.

The roadblock photo circulated widely after it was first shared on Facebook, with many Ugandans reacting with amusement and disbelief. Wine’s ability to move through tight security points has become part of a broader narrative about his ongoing standoff with state forces.

Police and military chiefs, including General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, have labelled Wine a wanted man, accusing him of destabilisation and incitement.

Rights groups and international observers have raised concern about the crackdown on opposition figures, which has included arrests of supporters and reported abuses.

In the video shared with the photo, Wine criticised the heavy security presence on Ugandan roads, saying roadblocks punish ordinary road users rather than improving security.

The opposition leader has also claimed his home has been raided multiple times and that his wife was injured during the operations, allegations that the army has denied.

Wine’s supporters are closely watching his moves, with many seeing the selfie as a symbolic moment in his fraught battle with state authorities.
