Kenyan road runner Brimin Misoi Kipkorir has been handed a five-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after testing positive for the banned substances Erythropoietin (EPO) and Furosemide.
In an announcement on its official X page, the AIU confirmed Misoi’s suspension, stating:
“The AIU has banned Brimin Misoi Kipkorir (Kenya) for 5 years from 17 February 2025 for Presence/Use of Prohibited Substances (EPO, Furosemide). DQ results from 22 November 2024.”
Misoi’s troubles began when he underwent an out-of-competition doping test on November 22, 2024, in Kaptagat. The initial test detected Furosemide, a diuretic often used as a masking agent, and further analysis confirmed the presence of EPO, a performance-enhancing drug.
Although given a chance to defend himself, Misoi admitted to the violations. His competition results from the test date onwards were annulled, and his original six-year ban was reduced to five years due to his early admission.
Ethiopian Marathoner Alemtsehay Asefa Also Banned
In a separate case, Ethiopian marathoner Alemtsehay Asefa has been banned for two years after committing three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period. Asefa failed to be available for testing in February, July, and October 2023 and was unable to provide sufficient justification.
The AIU confirmed her sanction, stating:
“The AIU has banned Alemtsehay Asefa (Ethiopia) for 2 years from 18 March 2024 for Whereabouts Failures. DQ results from 24 October 2023.”
Following the ruling, Asefa’s results from October 24, 2023, onwards have been disqualified, and she has forfeited any titles, medals, and prize money earned since then. Unlike Misoi, Asefa did not contest the ban and accepted the AIU’s decision.
